Lasers have been used in dentistry since 1990 and are used for a wide range of dental procedures.
What is a laser and how does it work?
A laser is an instrument that produces a very narrow, intense beam of light energy. When laser light comes in contact with tissue, it causes a reaction. The light produced by the laser can remove or shape tissue.
How do we use lasers in our office?
- Perform biopsy
- Reduce the discomfort of canker
- Reduce the duration of cold sores and to prevent cold sores from returning
- Expose partially visible wisdom teeth
- Remove muscle attachments that limit proper movement, cause spaces in-between teeth or cause gum recession – also known as a frenectomy
- Remove overgrown tissues caused by certain medications
- Remove or reshape gum tissue
What are the benefits of using dental lasers?
- Local anesthetic is not required for some procedures
- Can be more precise
- Faster treatment time which is especially beneficial when treating infants and children
- Controls bleeding during surgeries or biopsy procedures
- Reduces healing time and symptoms after some procedures
Are dental lasers safe?
Dental lasers are as safe as other dental instruments when used according to accepted practices by a trained practitioner. However, just as you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from prolonged exposure to the sun, when your dentist performs a laser procedure, you will be asked to wear special eyeglasses to protect your eyes from the laser.
What laser do we have in the office?
We use a Light Scalpel CO2 laser which is an American-made laser in Bothell, Washington.
